Lates Fees and Library Loot

I have a confession to make. I’ve been avoiding the library like an over-hyped book. It all started a couple of months ago when I forgot to return my selection of five books for…about a week. It’s not like I had a good excuse to not return the books. It was wintertime, but the roads were not snowy. Nor did I have any weekend plans; I may have tried to convince myself that I needed to clean the apartment, but I’m pretty sure I was playing the video game, Fallout 4, and racking up late fees instead. This happened once before at my old library. I kept books for so long that I ended up racking up THIRTY DOLLARS in late fees. And then I kept avoiding all of the late fee notices for so long that eventually the library threatened to turn me over to collections, and my mom ended up paying the balance. Those were some pretty dark financial times in my life, and I hope to never revisit them again. Also, yes mom, I know I still owe you thirty dollars from like seven years ago. Do you want to just write it off to bad debt? (LOL! ACCOUNTING JOKE!) Seriously though, do you?

Luckily, my late fees totaled only four dollars this time, and much to the library staff’s dismay, I walked in with a pocket full of quarters. You know those negative stereotypes of librarians? That’s basically who works at my local library. Late fees and pockets full of quarters or not, they’re always pinch-faced, and they look at me with lifeless eyes like they’re counting down the hours until they get to go home. Or, maybe they’re robots. Or…maybe they don’t approve that I bypass the self-checkout. I don’t mean to be an inconvenience…it’s just the self-checkout beeps loudly, and it startles me.

As for my selection this week, it’s as varied as usual. It’s been three long months since I’ve visited the library and the Young Adult stacks were filled with newer releases. I was like a book lover in…well…a library, and in about two minutes, books were toppling from my arms. I had to pause and think about how many books I could realistically read in a few weeks, so morosely, I placed most of them back on the shelves.  I decided to hold on to Mosquitoland by David Arnold and the Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh because both books received a lot of praise back in 2015, and it’s about time I catch up with the rest of you. I also picked up the Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater because everyone raves about this series, and I still haven’t read a book by Stiefvater. Oh! And they finally had a copy of Ms Marvel, Vol 2: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson (not pictured) that I snagged from the shelf immediately.

I was also feeling a little spooky this week, so I picked up Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest, Soulless by Gail Carriger, and No Ghouls Allowed by Victoria Laurie because I was such a fan of another book in Laurie’s Ghost Hunter Mystery series, Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls.

As giddy as I am to read Soulless, I think I’m going to cozy up with No Ghouls Allowed to see if I can finish another of Victoria Laurie’s books in one sitting.

What book are you currently reading?

Hahaha your posts are so fun to read. I just added Soulless to my TBR yesterday, it sounds so fun! You’ll have to let me know if you enjoy it.

      Thank you 😀

I tried reading from her Finishing School series (Etiquette and Espionage, etc.) but I couldn’t get into it at the time (the writing was good, I just wasn’t in the mood for that kind of story). And, since that was the book that started the whole late fees scenario, I didn’t really want to go rooting around for it again. Lately I’ve been jonesing for some paranormal/steampunk/comedy of manners sort of stories, and immediately remembered Soulless!

Hahaha I’m sorry about your late fee fiasco. I accidentally stole a book from my school library once – my mom was like they’re charging you for keeping this book to long. I swore I didn’t have it. Then I found it. Whoops! Still have it actually

I really like the way you have written this post and I have this image of a nasty librarian in my head now. That’s pretty nasty how those late fees can stack up and end up being quite some money in the end.

I heard good things about the The Wrath and the The Dawn. I haven’t read any of Sriefvater her books either, although everyone doe seem to rave about the Raven Boys, so I might pick it up eventually.

I don’t really go to the library anymore. When we were kids the library was free and got a lot of books from there, although my mom always made sure they got returned on time. Then the library got paid once you turn 18 and it’s not really worth it anymore. I rather pay a bit extra and actually own the book. And then there’s the issue of how they hardly have any english books here in libraries and I only read english books.

I am currently reading June by Audrey Carlan, a romance series about an escort. And the Mindjack short story collection by Susan Kaye Quinn, it’s great to be back in that world!

You have to pay to borrow library books once you turn 18?! That’s hard to wrap my mind around because library services in the US are “free” (and by “free”, I mean paid for our of taxes). I have a feeling library patronage would dwindle if we had to pay to borrow library books every visit (late fees not included).

Eh, you’re not so bad. I have a friend who has been banned from the library because of unpaid fees and has now taken a library card in her son’s name (he’s 2 years old) so she can borrow books. She’s really a nice person and everything, she’s just horrible with returning books.

I’ll be looking out for your Stiefvater review, I haven’t read The Raven Cycle yet, either. I’ve seen people exploding with glee because the final instalment will be published soon and I really want to avoid any spoilers because I do want to read the series someday.

I’m currently reading a French book a colleague asked me to review and then it’s on to Ink and Bone, which I’m really excited for! 🙂

The same reason why I haven’t been to the library for years. Welp. I don’t even know how much I owe. The collection letters are probably stacking up somewhere in the oblivion because I’ve moved so many times since then. We’re talking early 90s.

What goes around comes around. I forgive your $30 debt. Just remember that as your mother ages, you might have to pick up the tab for me!

Wow, that’s an impressive library fine! My library cuts you off once your fines top $5, so that’s the most I’ve owed at once. I’m not using my library much lately either though. Too many ARCs have meant that I end up returning a lot of books unread. I’m hoping to make some more time for the library again after I finish the books I picked up at ALA, but we’ll see 🙂
