Going to the Library with a Theme in Mind is Like Going on a Scavenger Hunt

I had better success reading through my last batch of library loot. I only returned one book unread– Thirteen Chairs by Dave Shelton. I think I knew the day I pulled the book from the library stacks that I probably wasn’t going to read it. The premise of the book sounded interesting enough– a boy enters a house he thought to be abandoned only to find twelve people sitting about, and they end up exchanging ghost stories– but honestly I only picked it because there were not that many YA novels that fell in to the horror genre.

The due dates for my batch of spooky books came at a most inopportune time though. Oh! Don’t get me wrong! I still eagerly traipsed on over to the library today (and this time with Jon by my side!). But, the night before, I started NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, and I knew these new books would be quite the distraction. Nosfera-who? I wanna read Etiquette and Espionage! If I can finish up NOS4A2 this week, and devour Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel, a graphic novel, I think I will be set for October reviews. Then I can start reading and prepping for Sci-Fi Month hosted by Rinn Reads. For now, I will try to tackle these books:

Embassytown by China Mieville (which I’m intimidated by)
Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger (even though my gut tells me this is more fantasy than sci-fi)
Fever Crumb by Phillip Reeve
Go, Mutants by Larry Doyle

And, in case I get bored with horror and sci-fi, I snagged

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier (recently recommended by Kaja @ Of Dragons and Hearts)
Town in a Pumpkin Bash by B.B. Haywood
Wondermark: Clever Tricks to Stave off Death by David Malki

How do you decide which books to check out from the library or buy from the book store?

Thanks for reminding me that I need to prep for Sci-fi Month! When I go to the library I usually have an embarrassing amount of books on hold so I only make a mini-list of backup books (from my Goodreads TBR) in case I don’t like what I have on hold. Still, I usually end up checking out about 10-15 books every week. Obviously, I don’t read them all. 🙂

  I’m still reacquainting myself with the library, so I haven’t quite figured out how to put holds on books yet. I’ll level up one of these days, and make use of the nifty service though!

Lool, I always thought Etiquette and Espionage was some sort of YA action chick flick. Guess I was wrong! You’re so lucky, your local library seems to have a lot of choices, mine doesn’t! I prefer ebook to hard copy, but since I wanted to spare some money I went to my library and oh boy I was disappointed! They seem to only have books I’ve already read. And the one I want have often already been borrowed by other people and don’t seem to be coming back.

I waited ages for Crown of Midnight and eventually decided to buy it.

  I’m not really sure what Etiquette and Espionage is, really. I think it’s got werewolves and it might be vaguely neo-victorian and I’m sure there are fight scenes a plenty. I just know a few reviewers I trust have raved about it, so I couldn’t resist!
  
  I haven’t read the Throne of Glass series yet, can you believe it?! It was a book I was trying to find at the library, but no luck. I did just buy the first book in the series for my e-reader though. I plan to read it before the year is out.

Oh, it has been a long while since I visited a library. I love library though, it’s a great helper to find something to read when you are in a budget. I usually check out older books, especially ones that is pretty difficult to find in a bookstore. Library is a heaven for unusual books, and this is the feature I love the most about it.

As for buying, I prefer to buy something from my favorite authors or anything I’d like to keep for my self.

I wish my library would be nearer though, it’s quite inconvenient to go there everyday.

  Luckily, my library is about a block away! I have a feeling if it were any farther, I wouldn’t find my weekend trips too appealing. I hate driving >.<

I usually just roam around until I find something I want to read, or I go in with a set book in mind. I love just spending time in the Library, I love walking through the shelves and waiting until a cover or title catches my eye. A lot of the time I find things I forgot I wanted to read and I grab those : )
